چکیده

The concentration of dissolved fatty acids decreased in seawater as it flowed across a windward barrier reef at Grand Cayman. No comparable changes were observed over a leeward fringing reef although an increasingly enriched organic surface layer could be detected as distance from shore increased. across reefs (e.g. Johannes et al. 1972). Here I report observations on changes in dissolved fatty acids in water crossing a Caribbean barrier reef, with measurements from water collected over a fringing reef for comparison. Several oceanographers have worked on the biological productivity of coral reef communities. A common approach has been to measure changes in concentration of various chemical properties as seawater flows I thank J. W. Porter and J. S. Patton for comments on this manuscript. ’ This investigation was supported by funds from the American Philosophical Society and from the Rackham School of The University of Michigan. Samples were taken during March 1974 at Grand Cayman in the British West Indies. A barrier reef off the northwest tip of the island and a fringing reef off the western shore were selected ( Fig. 1). Prevailing winds were from the northeast, resulting in an onshore wind over the barrier reef area and an offshore wind over the fringing reef

Past, present and future state of the carbonate system and acidification in Hengam coral reef in the Persian Gulf

Assuming the possible scenario ICCP RCP8.5, by 2100, the pH of seawater in Hengam coral reef in the Persian Gulf will decrease by 0.46 compared to 1880 (to less than 7.72). Total dissolved inorganic carbon will increase from 2006 to 2263 µmol/kg. The concentration of bicarbonate ions will increase by 24% and the carbonate ions will decrease by 51%. The saturation of calcium carbonate in seawate...

Postglacial Fringing-Reef to Barrier-Reef conversion on Tahiti links Darwin's reef types

In 1842 Charles Darwin claimed that vertical growth on a subsiding foundation caused fringing reefs to transform into barrier reefs then atolls. Yet historically no transition between reef types has been discovered and they are widely considered to develop independently from antecedent foundations during glacio-eustatic sea-level rise. Here we reconstruct reef development from cores recovered b...

Sponge exhalent seawater contains a unique chemical profile of dissolved organic matter

Sponges are efficient filter feeders, removing significant portions of particulate and dissolved organic matter (POM, DOM) from the water column. While the assimilation and respiration of POM and DOM by sponges and their abundant microbial symbiont communities have received much attention, there is virtually no information on the impact of sponge holobiont metabolism on the composition of DOM a...

Coral cavity sponges depend on reef-derived food resources: stable isotope and fatty acid constraints

The diet of cavity sponges on the narrow fringing reefs of Curaçao, Caribbean was studied. The origin and resources of the bulk food of these sponges, i.e., dissolved organic matter (DOM), were identified using stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes and fatty acid biomarkers. We found that phytoplankton and its derived DOM from the adjacent open sea and from reef overlying water is not the main so...

Fringing reef growth and morphology: a review

Fringing reefs are generally not simple veneers of coral growth along tropical shorelines. Extensive research over the past few decades, based on radiocarbon dating of Holocene reef deposits, has indicated that they can develop in a complex variety of ways even though the surface morphology may appear relatively simple. The principal factor that appears to determine the growth and morphology of...
